Francesinha Sandwich

By chef Gulasch

This recipe, which comes from Porto, Portugal, was created by adapting the French version of the Croque Monsieur sandwich. However, this Portuguese recipe differs greatly from the French version. It is a sandwich full of meat (originally including beef steak), covered in a bold tomato sauce made with beer and wine. On top, the sandwich is finished with melted cheese and a poached egg. We recommend sharing this sandwich, as it is definitely not a light snack :)

  1. Prepare the ingredients. Prepare all the ingredients - we will be cooking with them in a moment 🌭✨

  2. Slice the onion and garlic. Slice the onion and garlic into thin slices

  3. Saute the onion and garlic. Saute the onion and garlic in lard or oil over medium heat for about 5 minutes until golden, then season with salt

  4. Add the wine and beer. Add the wine and beer and let simmer over medium heat until reduced by about half, so the alcohol evaporates

  5. Add the tomatoes and simmer. Add the chopped tomatoes and let simmer gently under a lid over low heat for at least as long as it takes to prepare the sandwich (ideally about 30 minutes)

  6. Slice the sausage and sausage. Slice the sausage and the sausage into smaller pieces

  7. Fry the meat and prepare the egg. Fry the sausage and the sausage in a pan over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes until golden and at the same time prepare the poached egg over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes

  8. Toast the bread and set aside. Set the egg, sausage and sausage aside and toast the sandwich bread over medium heat until golden, about 2 minutes on each side

  9. Blend and strain the sauce. Blend the sauce and, if necessary, strain it through a sieve

  10. Assemble the sandwich. In a deep plate, layer a slice of sandwich bread, the sausage, the sausage, the ham and the second slice of sandwich bread

  11. Add the cheese, egg and sauce. Add the cheese and poached egg on top and pour over the hot sauce. Serve 🌭🍽️✨
